AKB48, The Idol Girl Group

AKB48 short for Akihabara48 is a Japanese Idol Girl Group produced by Akimoto Yasushi. As of November 2013, which has 89 members, whose ages range from early teens to mid-20s. 

The group has their own theater, located on the eighth floor of the Don Quijote store in Akihabara, Tokyo. This group is one of the highest-earning musical acts in Japan, with 2012 record sales of over US$226 million. They are currently signed under King Records, originally from DefSTAR RECORDS/Sony Music Japan.

As of November 7, 2013, the group consists of 89 girls, divided among several teams such as Team A with 19 members, Team K with 20 members, Team B with 22 members, and Team 4 with 16 members. There are 10 aspiring members who are grouped as kenkyūsei. There are 2 AKB48 members who have been transferred to overseas sister groups. Some members hold concurrent positions with AKB48's sister groups.
